Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is in the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA. It is an enormous sculpture carved in granite on the side of Mount Rushmore.
The memorial shows the faces of four American Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodor Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. George Washington was the 1st American President and he ruled the country for eight years from 1789 to 1797. Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd president of the US, 1801 – 1809. He was the father of the Declaration of Independence. Theodor Roosevelt was the 26th president, 1901 – 1909. He led the country to the new progressive era. He is generally ranked in polls of historians and political scientists as one of the five best presidents. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the US, 1861 – 1865. He led the nation through its greatest moral and political crisis – the American Civil War. Each head is about 18 metres high. It was carved by American sculptor Gutzon Borglum. It was started in 1927 and completed in 1941. About 2,000,000 people visit this spectacular memorial every year.

The Native Americans
Thousand of years before Europeans arrived in America the people now called Native Americans lived there. It is commonly thought that they migrated from Asia between 12,000 and 40,000 years ago. The Native American people lived in different groups all over America. They had many different ways of life and spoke hundreds of different languages. Native Americans lived off the land. They hunted animals such as deer and buffalo and they were farmers, too. They made tools and weapons from stone and wood. They also made beautiful pottery and ornaments. Sadly, today there are only 2 milion Native Americans left. Many tribes, languages and traditions have disappeared.

Florida Keys
The Florida Keys is a chain of islands off southern Florida in the USA. It stretches for over 309 km into the Atlantic Ocean.
There are beautiful tropical plants all over the islands. The largest island in the chain is Key Largo, which is 50 km long. Along its east coast lies the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which was the first undersea park in the US. The Overseas Highway, the longest over-water road in the US, joins Key Largo to Key West. It is over 200 km long. Key West is the most important island in the chain, and probably the most famous.
It is easy to see why the Keys were the setting for so many romantic films and songs. Nowadays, they provide the perfect location for holidays, water sports or just relaxing in the sun.
