Coketown is a fictional place of industry darkened by pollution. Factories belch smoke into the sky, covering every surface in soot. The air is thick, the streets lifeless, and for the workers each day is the same as (1). But the future of cities is changing. From the darkened streets of Coketown to the sunlit avenues of Masdar City, urban planning is taking a revolutionary turn. In this futuristic metropolis, traditional cars are being replaced by (2) electric cars, and technology is reshaping the way people move and live. Yet, not all visions of the future have been embraced. Some early smart city designs failed to capture real human experiences and were seen as (3). Technology alone cannot build a community, and urban planners have learned that true progress requires more than just efficiency - it demands (4) civic participation, and a commitment to shared decision-making. One city taking a bold step in this direction is Chicago, where the Array of Things project ensures that real-time data is (5) to the public thus allowing citizens to be more than just passive residents; they become active participants in shaping their city.
